Film review - sister act

Sister act two was released in December of 1993 and was directed by Bill Duke. This film is the successful sequel to the 1992 original film sister act. This light hearted enjoyable film features major stars like Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. This will attract a older and younger audience due to the diversity in a age of the cast.

This film follows the adventures of a Las Vegas showgirl who we witness in the first film going undercover as a nun in a convent to evade her captors. However, in this film we see her return to help a struggling schools music programme. This heart-warming and humorous plot appeals to people wanting to feel happy and content after a light hearted watch. We see Whoopi Goldberg portraying Sister Mary Clarence as she gives a group of unmotivated teenagers a sense of community and confidence to sing regionally in a gospel choir, despite opposition by many, in a last attempt to save their school.

When I initially think of this film, the first thing that springs to mind are the amazing vocals and songs featured. Although the songs or religious and gospel songs to fit into the general theme of the film, They are sung in a way anybody can enjoy and find entertaining whether you relate to the songs or not. These songs add to the cinematic experience of sister act two and is one of the main attractions of the film. In addition to this a amazing sense of humour is created by this film due to the juxtaposition of nuns and them dancing and singing Infront of people without a care in the world. We usually perceive nuns as serious and would never think of them performing, which is what makes the film so amusing.

The use of the idea of a journey is used greatly in this film as we see a overall change in most , if not all characters in someway which appeals greatly to a audience. The film as a whole has a joyful and vibrant feel due to the saturation and the amount of colours in the scene which is added by the use of graffiti in the town. There is also a incredibly diverse cast, with a wide variety of ethnicities which would be new at this time. I also believe that the cast is female dominated as both of the main characters are female. Although there are male characters , the majority are females who have a great influence on the audience, like Lauryn Hills character Rita.
