Joker is an extraordinary, boundary pushing film that left me absolutely shocked and stunned. Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker steers away from the usual hero/villain film by being raw, emotional, and unsettling in the best possible way. It's rare that a film can make you feel so deeply for its protagonist while also confronting you with uncomfortable truths about society, but Joker achieves this brilliantly.
Joaquin Phoenix's performance is simply unforgettable. He brings Arthur Fleck to life with such vulnerability, pain, and ultimately, terrifying transformation into the Joker. Phoenix’s dedication to the role is evident in every moment, his physical transformation is remarkable, but it’s the depth of emotion he conveys that really captivates. The laughter, the awkward body language, the gradual decay of Arthur’s mind it’s all portrayed with such intensity that you can’t help but feel for him, even as his actions grow darker. It's truly one of the finest performances I've ever seen
.
The film’s depiction of Gotham City is another highlight. It’s a bleak, gritty, and decaying place that feels like a character in itself, setting the perfect place for Arthur’s journey. The atmosphere is dark and depressing, yet beautifully shot, with every frame crafted to pull you deeper into Arthur's perspective. The use of colour and lighting, the way the camera lingers on certain moments, all of it enhances the unsettling mood that hangs over the entire film.
What really sets Joker apart, though, is its willingness to tackle tough issues. Mental illness, societies breakdown, isolation these are heavy and political themes, and the film doesn’t shy away from them. It forces you to look at the cracks in the system and how easily someone like Arthur can fall through them. It makes you think on how we treat those who are struggling, and it does so without preaching or offering easy answers.
The score by Hildur Guonadottir is simply put fantastic. It’s haunting and eerie, perfectly complementing the film’s tone and adding layers to Phoenix’s performance. There are moments when the music alone sends chills down your spine, reinforcing the emotional weight of the story.
Even though Joker is counted to be a part of the DC universe but considered a standalone piece by Warner Bros. Joker was set up to not have a sequel but Todd Phillips expressed interest into creating one to continue Joker's arc. The sequel is called Joker: Folie à Deux and stars Joaquin Phoenix who reprises his role as Arthur Fleck/Joker and Lady Gaga joins the cast as Harley Quinn who is his love interest. The sequel releases on the 4th October 2024 which is only 5 days from now!
In the end, Joker is more than just a movie it's an experience. It challenges you, makes you think, and stays with you long after you leave the cinema or turn the TV off. It's a film that will likely spark debates for years to come, and rightfully so. Phoenix's performance, Phillips direction, and the film's daring approach makes it a truly exceptional piece of cinema.
