Kid Cudi also known as Scott Mescudi is well known for his distinctive blend of pop and rap aswell as including elements of psychedelic music or rock.

His career was kicked off by his hit single Day ‘n’ Nite which he produced alongside his friend Dot da genius. Whilst initially published onto his MySpace page it became a large hit and later included on his debut mixtape A Kid Named Cudi released in 2008. This caught the attention of rapper Kanye West who signed him to his record label GOOD Music in late 2008.

The single was issued again as the lead single for his debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day released in 2009.

The third single from the album being Pursuit of Happiness also receiving critical acclaim, which many owe to the emotional lyrics aswell as the instrumental created by bands Ratatat and MGMT.

whilst less popular, a second music video was released for Pursuit of Happiness, labeled the “Megaforce Version.” The song lyrics describe the feeling of night terrors aswell as general themes of depression, feelings of reliving the same routine and not fitting into society. Both music videos use different accompanying visuals to illustrate this meaning. Whilst the other video uses slow-motion to separate Kid-Cudi from the crowd of people he is in, as he moves in real time to create a sense of social isolation. This music video utilises abstract surreal imagery aswell as editing tricks to create the illusion that he is stuck in a loop of sleeping on his couch. Many have stated that the video feels like an accurate representation of those who suffered from sleep paralysis, attempting to get out of bed, unable to wake. It also serves as a symbol for how Scott feels trapped in his love and how he may never achieve his dreams, which many relate to feelings of depression.
