'Subtitles For Feelings' is Patrick Droney's 2nd album. This album is what it says, it puts feelings and emotions into words and songs - specifically ones that have affected Patrick's life (as well as your own) and so we can understand them more clearly, just like subtitles tend to do.
I found this album when he began promoting one of the tracks from it called 'Go Getter' (May 2023). This track is all about time and its importance. Patrick describes Go Getter as 'the invitation to jump down the rabbit hole, to ask questions, repair the frames... to go get your memories.' One admirable trait about Patrick is that he is a very observant man, not only in his music, but with the people around him too. I've met him and I can assure that he remembers a lot about people - even things you may have forgotten about yourself! He is definitely full of surprises.
This album means the most to me, it made me more observant and intrigued to understand the concept of life and its meaning more. It's definitely Patrick's wording that has motivated me the most though. When I say Patrick is a very observant and poetic man, here is proof. This is the caption of his announcement that his track 'Free' from Subtitles For Feelings was released:
"I like the phrase 'catch feelings' because it hints at the idea that they come from a higher place-the source. One of those core feelings that often slips through our hands is freedom. I feel free when I am truly in the present moment. It's impossible to stay there, but we do get these glimpses, like poetry in motion, of an ordinary frame turned extraordinary simply because you know you're in it. This is a subtitle I hope you read from the record. I think of the way a bird soars through the sky or how evening light paints the downtown concrete on a walk home after checking on all of your people. I've been taking these videos as my way of checking into the moments around me. I put them together and was moved at how seemingly random frames connect to the same film - this Life movie. All to say, 'Free' is my way of carrying a little peace in my pocket, and I hope it travels well with you, too."
Free is just one of many tracks on the album that has changed my life, as well as Little Supernovas - which focuses on the idea of not missing a moment, admiring and giving every little thing just a fraction of your time can impact your perception of life as a whole.
However, the album also includes tracks like Shotgun Rider, and Runaway which are uplifting, yet still hold deep meanings which you won't catch unless you read them. Patrick is the most mindful and genius songwriter I know, and being able to speak to him has proven that to me. Even just holding a random conversation about 'how is your day going', it's so interesting to see how he goes completely in depth of the little things he noticed, and putting meaning to the ones I noticed too. He (as a person, let alone his music) has changed my life in many ways - I notice things I used to ignore, capture every single moment. His influence has helped me understand everything more. Honestly, I feel grateful and extremely lucky to have Patrick and his music in my life.
Subtitles For Feelings will always mean the most to me - specifically a track called 'Tether', Patrick and I describe Tether as a 'hug in the form of a song', 'a guide for the lost' and 'the reassurance track of them all'.
'Caroline' is a track on the album for the love-sick. It was my favourite before Tether. The music video for Caroline is what I love about the album as a whole. The music video was done by Patrick himself, post-production of the album. He said he felt like he needed to do something after completing the album so he assured his team that he would film, edit and produce the music video himself. Patrick explored New York with his friends, and captured random clips from the scene. After a few weeks of gathering moments, he pieced them together and created the beautiful music video for Caroline. If you love scenery montages and the 'little things' in life - this music video is definitely for you. It was another motivation for me to capture everything.
There is so much to say about Subtitles For Feelings and how it changed my life, as well as Patrick Droney and his meaningful words. But as a summary, this album opens your eyes to a new point of view, a new perspective of the world. He reminds you that the present is so valuable and momentary. "When you practice the act of Regarding time, I believe you're in a correspondence with yourself across the timeline. Maybe intuition is just remembering ahead. The dream dreamt really does get delivered."
