Marie Claire is an monthly magazine first published in France in 1937, followed by the UK in 1941. The feature editions focuses on women around the world and several global issues. Marie Claire magazine also covers health, beauty, and fashion topics. This magazine is aimed towards the mainstreamer and aspirer audience type who enjoy the comfort of a long running magazine but aspire to be a modern independent woman.
Front cover
This front cover of Marie Curie is very typical and conventional of a fashion magazine with the bold masthead and the numerous cover lines included on the front. However it has a more sophisticated and mature feel to it than the everyday mainstream fashion magazines. There is only one image and all of the copy is in red or white presenting a cohesive and put together atmosphere. The copy even ties in to the main image as she is wearing red lipstick and red clothes. The lack of cluttered smaller images and straplines only adds to this feel. Despite the fact that some straplines are extremely typical of a fashion magazine some are not as typical and show a change in attitude and that opinions of women in a fashion magazine are evolving. We see the cover line "Fashion special" and " Must haves to buy once and wear forever" which are very typical cover lines for a women's fashion mag. However, there are also cover lines about, body and mind strength, abortion and being alone, which are less conventional.
Audio- visual
Marie Claire has a relatively large online presence with a heavy focus on celebrity culture and new up and coming films and trends. In this particular example, we see two actors from the film After which proved extremely popular when it landed on Netflix, meaning it would attract a mainstream audience which MC would target. The video itself is only around 5 minute long, meaning it wouldn't be too much of a inconvenience for people to watch as it is something that doesn't require much concentration- its a easy watch. By including two young trending actors in a YouTube video, MC is appealing to the younger generation who may not have been interested in MC before as it is a older magazine. By taking advantage of social media and the internet, Marie Claire is increasing its demographic in a successful way.
