Media Diary Week 8: A24

A24 is an American independent entertainment company that specifically focuses on film and television. The company was established in 2012 in New York and since then has been very successful. The indie company aims to provide entertaining unique stories. Some of the company's most successful projects are Everything Everywhere All At Once, Moonlight, and Ladybird. The company is known for its flashy cinematography and unique and offbeat sense of humor throughout some of its films which made the company a reliable source for film and TV. Curran and Seaton argued that independent productions company such as A24 struggle to be competitors in the marketplace due to the dominance of corporate power such as Disney. However, A24 challenges these ideas as the company has found a lot of success throughout the years since it was established in 2012 achieving many awards and nominations at the Oscars for various different films such as Moonlight which snatched the awards for the academy award for best writing, the academy wards for best actor in a supporting role and the controversial award for best picture in 2017.

This success shows that A24 does not have an issue in being able to compete in the film industry achieving many awards. Although, in terms of box office A24 struggles to compete to its larger counterparts, this may be due to the fact that A24 uses unrecognisable and not well known characters or stars in their films and tv shows which does not allow them to target a broader audience that are already familiar with the characters shown on screen. For this reason many companies such as Disney are able to distribute media texts at a much larger rate due to the success of franchises such as the MCU. This idea of franchise filmmaking is an example of Curran and Seaton's industry theory as the use of franchises and well known stars allows companies such as Disney to have a large audience already established that they can market their newest projects to and be more successful at the box office due to this established audience.
