Mitski representation

Album covers

Mitski started making music in 2012, she is a Japanese American indie song writer. Her first self-released first two albums where “Lush” – released in 2012 and “Retired from sand, new career in business” which was released in 2013 which are personally my favourite two albums.

Mitski created the lush album as a start to her college project and most of those songs were written by her when she was 18. Altogether, Mitski has 7 albums – she started at 18 and is now 23.

Mitski is well known for her slow, melancholy music which better explore the different types of anxieties. Like myself, I feel people get drawn to Mitski’s music because of the sad atmosphere her music has, and they can find themself relating to the music. The main reason Mitski started music is so she can express herself and how she can fully express the anxieties she has within metaphors in her songs.

Music video

This is Mitski’s music video “my love, mine all mine” and all her songs have hidden meanings – which are personal to her and her life yet those who can relate or also understand what she has been through will sympathise with her. In this song, she is referring to a singular or irreplaceable individual of love. All her song – well most – are about past relationships which she explains in an interview about her song “Nobody” where they explain how and why nobody loves her – hence the name. Mitski’s songs all really have a target audience for teenagers – since they started their music business when she was 18, they would understand the difficulties of finding love hence the meaning behind the majority of all their songs.

Mitski is an independent song writer, and she writes for themselves and performs by themselves in music videos. However, they cannot control the representation they get on social media. Mitski is a respectable being and it is seen through her interviews. In 2019 Mitski had quit music because of how demanding the music industry was – she felt as if it was unhealthy for her self-image, but she did gain popularity on social media despite her accounts being controlled by her manager. Overall, Mitski does have control on what she does due to her music being based on her personal stories, but she does not control on what is posted on her social media.

ANALYSIS ON THE VIDEO

This music video, despite the hidden meaning, looks like she is reaching for something – hence the ladder that is made of chairs. Perhaps she did this to make it look like she wants something, and to show the difficulties of not being able to get something or someone so easily and that there will be obstacles along the way. However, at the beginning with the chair image with the black background – if you look closely there is a noose just at the bottom of the chairs leg which could have one interpretation. The interpretation could mean that the whole music video could imply a lead up to a suicide attempt.

Interview

This video is kind of like an interview, it is a way on how you can get to know her more if she is your favourite artist. Most music artists do these because of popularity and so their fans can get to know them as a person more – which is also why Mitski did this.

Her interviews can possibly be viewed in a negative light as they may not know which is true about Mitski and was factual, so they may believe that she is lying to simply to make her audience think that she is an interesting person. Personally, I believe that she is telling the wholehearted truth because of the details she puts into her answers – and a person lying normally stutters whereas she doesn’t. Mitski uses expressive body language by using her arms to move whilst talking – being very expressive and engaging to her audience to make them also feel involved by looking into the camera occasionally.

The representation of this context fits into society today because of how relatable the lyrics can be depending on how thorough your understanding is for any of her songs.
