This picture captures a moment of protest within Paris at the moment, due to French President, Emmanuel Macron signing controversial pension reforms into law, which raised the state pension from 62 to 64. I would assume that this photograph was taken in a spontaneous act that captures the significance of the moment and the feeling of the french people at this time. This shot is a wide shot that uses the rule of thirds, with the man in the centre of the picture being the main focus of the photograph is closest to the frame. This image uses low key lighting and shadows a lot, specifically the use of the shadow covering the mans face. This suggests that there is no identify to the man as his face is covered with his hat, and that is not what matters, whether it is activists, students, workers or various other groups that are protesting it shows that the so many people have been forced to take their opinions to the streets so their voices can be heard and show their concerns and grievances.
Moreover, the colour palette of this image uses lots of blacks and red which both connote an element of danger or even anger, which captures the feeling of the man in the image and the french protestors in general. These are also themes that we would associate with this type of protesting as often it could come across as quite harmful. Furthermore, the mise-en-scene in this photograph such as the electric scooters pushed on the floor and the fire behind the man highlights the violent nature of the protests, and that the French people will do whatever it takes to get what they believe to be right, even if it means tearing their own city apart.
