Rep of women in The Returned

Lily Evans

Representation of women in The Returned:

In the Returned, bell hooks argues that women are represented as inferior to men, and that they are forced to comply to the patriarchal values of society. For example, Julie’s character is forced into maternal values. She is also haunted by her attack from the Underpass, as shown by her hallucinations- the flickering lights during her panic attack scene visually signify the panic and hysteria she is forced to live with due to the attack, representing how she is mentally damaged due to the actions of a man, which she had no control over. She also is a nurse, a typically feminine job role, emphasizing the idea of her role in society- she is a character used to represent nurture, maternalism and fear. Even at the end of the season, she throws her life away to leave with Victor and go with The Returned, showcasing how a woman’s role is entirely based around the men in their life- where Victor goes, she goes, he is the dominant figure despite being a child. Julie is passive and complies to his needs.
