Representation of Celebrities: Sabrina Carpenter

Sabrina Carpenter is an American songwriter, actress and singer. She first starred on Disney Channel and got recognition on the show 'Girl Meets World', and later released her first single in 2014, "Can't Blame a Girl for Trying". Her 'emails i can't send', 2022 album, with famous hits such as 'Nonsense' and 'Feather', gaining some more attention to her, she opened for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, 2022-2023, and released her 2024 album, 'Short n' Sweet', releasing number one singles 'Espresso' and 'Please Please Please'.

In 2021, pop stars Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett featured in a love triangle together. This love scandal had brought out many hatreds from all three different fandoms towards either Sabrina, Olivia or Joshua. Olivia and Joshua first met back in early 2019 on the set of ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’, they were co-stars together and the internet was in love with their relationship on and off stage. Although their relationship was never confirmed, viewers were convinced that Olivia and Joshua were more than friends when the show premiered in November 2019. However, after Olivia’s first debut single ‘Driver’s License’, January 2021, fans started to speculate, that things weren’t so perfect after all with them. It seemingly started the first love triangle of 2021, and the internet was shook. At the time, fans were convinced that the song shaded her rumoured ex-boyfriend and, his new girlfriend, Sabrina. Olivia stated within the song, “And your probably with that blonde girl, who always made me doubt, she’s so much older than me”. Importantly, it’s to note that in an earlier version of the song, which she teased on Instagram in 2020, the lyrics originally were ‘brunette girl’, instead of ‘blonde’. At the time of the track’s release, Olivia was 17 and Sabrina was 21, which also appears to be reflected in the song’s lyrics. Exactly two weeks after Olivia’s single debuts, Sabrina releases a sing called ‘Skin’, rumoured to be a response song to Olivia. One of the first lyrics Sabrina sings within the song says “Maybe blonde was the only rhyme”- which was directed towards back to Olivia. Fast forward to 2024, Olivia and Sabrina still unfortunately, haven’t forgave each other over their ‘love triangle’ in 2021. Many fans of both, dream of their friendship together, as they write similar songs, and know how powerful they would be together. Sadly for Joshua, they’re breaking records and some of the youngest artists to sell out arenas.

Sabrina's music video 'Taste' was released this year featuring famous actress Jenna Ortega. Although the music video doesn't represent Sabrina and Jenna realistically, as they aren't murderers, it does suggest Sabrina's last relationship dig at singer-songwriter's Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. Before Sabrina and Shawn dated, the internet was obsessed with the relationship between singers Shawn and Camila, probably because of how much you could tell they loved each other. However, after Sabrina and Shawn broke it off, in early 2023, Shawn and Camila were spotted at the famous American festival 'Coachella' in April 2023, and were seen rekindling and kissing. Sabrina's chorus of the song 'Taste' states, "I heard you're back together, and if that's true, you'll just have to taste me when he's kissing you". The characters that Jenna and Sabrina both play within the music video could imply Sabrina and Camila 'fighting' over Shawn, as they keep trying to kill each other within the music video to 'win' the boy, Shawn. This could represent girls in everyday life how they feel they have to do everything to 'beat' another girl to get with boy, even if that results in trying to hurt each other. She jokes with the lyrics "I know I've been known to share", which could be a dig at both 'love triangles' with Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett back in 2021, and now Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes in 2023.

Sabrina Carpenter has been known for wearing ‘revealing’ clothes either on stage when performing or saying ‘inappropriate’ lyrics for younger listeners. She has faced some hate comments from parent’s that have attended her ‘Short n’ Sweet’ world tour, with the show being ‘not suitable for children’. As Sabrina use to feature on Disney Channel, in her teens, a lot of her audience is now in their later teens their self or even a younger adult, like Sabrina herself. But individuals’ believe ‘she’s meant to be for the children’, but as Sabrina is 25 years of age, and was on Disney Channel 7 years ago, it’s obvious that she was going to evolve overtime and find herself, such as what type of lyrics she’s going to perform and what type of clothes she likes to wear. As with all successful pop singers, Sabrina has faced some backlash for her explicit lyrics and raunchy performances during her 'Short n' Sweet' and 'emails i can't send' tours. This criticism started when she was opening for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, 2022-23, and she would sing an different outro each night to her song, 'Nonsense'. The lyrics were a tribute to whatever city she was performing in, but could sometimes be dirty. Parents of younger listeners started to realise these and started to criticism Sabrina and her songs. Now during her 'Short n' Sweet' tour, instead of an outro, during her new song, 'Juno', she does a different 'freaky' position each night. Individuals who have watched the tour or watching online find this very inappropriate for children who listen to her, or watch her live.
