Spider-Man No Way Home movie analysis

This movie brings back some of the antagonists from the previous Spider-man movies. One of the key visual codes to this is the background which further emphasises what this movie is about. The background looks almost like a warp gate due to how it looks so twisted, which could by symbolic of a time warp. This may lead to an enigma code, and it may make the audience question how previous antagonists came into this timeline. However, if the audience had watched the Doctor Strange movie, they may conclude that he might have something to do with the warp – becoming an action code. In addition, some mise-en-scene foreshadows some of the past characters that are also in this movie – such as the Green Goblin and Doc Oc’s tentacles. Furthermore, a written code that I have also identified is the title “No Way Home” which could perhaps mean one of the main protagonists gets into a severe event and is unable to return home – particularly Spider-man.

Some of the appeals that may have been used for this specific movie poster would be the need for aesthetic sensations. The movie poster editor may have not added as such bright colours for the most part, the audience would mainly focus on the middle which is where the bright colours are – making it more alluring to the audience as it is directly in the middle – and your peripheral vision would make you be able to see the whole poster anyway if your looking directly in the middle. Coming from Steve Neale’s theory of genre, from just the movie poster you can tell that this movie is already action pact as there is a lot going on in the poster and it is just in your face – however if you know the company “Marvel Studios” you are aware that their products are already action pact, so you already know what you are in for – tension and fighting.

However, like in most Marvel Studio movies, the protagonist is male in this movie. Yet they do have some representation of women, but not in the stereotypical way, Marvel represents there woman as strong and independent which completely contrasts most movies which represent there woman as submissive and weak. The female protagonist in this movie, MJ, is not a superhero – she is just an ordinary girl who goes to school, yet if you have watched the other Spider-man movies including this actor of MJ, you know she is strong and independent. There isn’t a lot of female representation in this movie poster – in fact there is just one female however it may highlight the fact that with her body language to be tall and proud it shows that she may be more than just an ordinary girl with no powers.

Typically, in a movie poster, the title is usually the biggest words which is true, but the word of this title is dark unlike majority of other movie posters.  However, because Marvel Studios is such a big company for the movies they create, the title’s do not need to be the biggest this as the characters in the movie posters are so well known and popular. Finally, the colours of the movie poster show the feel of the movie and to represent the atmosphere and how certain members of the audience may feel – since it is a mixture of dark and light, there is a possibility the movie will have some dark themes yet also light themes – once again like your typical Marvel Studios movie.
