The MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) is a amalgamation of superheroes and contrasting storylines which are unified as a whole across its whole 11 year span and 23 movies (the universe is still ongoing).
These comic book superheroes have been around since the 1930s but gained popularity and increased sales during the 40s when WWII was going on. These comic books held patriotic values and storylines reviving round the current events of there time evidently shown with superheroes like Captain America who wears his countries colours of red white and blue, the MCU also panders towards maintaining the values expressed in these storylines creating movies like Captain America - The First Avenger set in WWII where he fights Nazis. These movies also tend to send messages regarding real world issues as the Ultron storyline focused on the fears of nuclear war, communism and artificial intelligence.
Though these movies cash in millions, even billions these days the idea of the MCU was a gamble at the start as marvel would give out the rights to their characters so they wouldn't really see big returns if a movie did well such as the X-Men movies which where owned by Fox and the Toby Mcguire Spider-Man movies that where owned by Sony.
Their rival DC also where raking in billions at the movies with their second installment of the Batman Trilogy films so Marvel took a loan to create the first movie of the MCU Iron Man. This movie was in the simplest terms a success making billions subsequently laying the foundation for the rest of the marvel movies and its phases.
