Updated: Jun 13, 2018

Magazine:

Men's Health

Publisher:

Rodale Press

Genre:

Lifestyle/Fitness

Genre Conventions:

The cover is what you would expect of your typical Men's fitness and lifestyle magazines with the cover displaying a man (Chris Hemsworth) showing off his physique and his muscles. The layout is simple, offers lifestyle advice and displays multiple pieces of texts which could be considered clickbait like '48 WAYS TO BOOST TESTOSTERONE' (even though it's a magazine and not a website).

Settings/Locations:

Plain white background as no detailed background is needed as the main focus is the physique of Chris Hemsworth as that is what they are essentially advertising to the audience of what they can be like if they work hard enough.

Representations:

Shows men as masculine and as though that if you want to be a real man, you have to be fit, strong and athletic.

Representation of Social Groups:

Shows men as masculine and as though that if you want to be a real man, you have to be fit, strong and athletic. Gives the idea that men need to have the 'ideal' body. Furthermore, the men in these magazines tend to be young like the target audience of the magazine and it gives the idea that you should make the most of your youth while you still have it to get into shape.

Media Language:

He is centred in front of the masthead to show that he is the centre of attention and that his physique is the main focus of the magazine. In the centre point of the cover is his muscles which are shown to the side so the readers are drawn to them straight away. Furthermore, the fact that the magazine are bold enough to actually hide part of the title of the magazine shows that they are well known brand and that people will still be able to recognise what magazine it is, even if it is partly covered.

Appeals to the target audience

Having a celebrity on the front cover is an appeal within itself. The reader will see Chris Hemsworth and feel motivated as they'll think that if whatever routine is working out for him then it will work out for them as well.

Article

The article includes an interview with Chris Hemsworth, he discusses his diet and what works best for him and also on another page his workout routine, in which the title is 'Train like Thor'. This gives the idea that if you, the audience too follow this routine then you can be a hero as well.
