Magazine:
GQ
Publisher:
Genre:
Lifestyle/Culture
Genre Conventions:
Is released monthly, shows a teaser of what is inside the magazine. Is for men and talks about masculinity. Also, includes fashion (Armani). Unlike other magazines however she isn't in front of the masthead and all the text is surrounding and over her, acting as a border.
Settings/Locations:
Like the other magazines, their is no distinct border and it is just a plain grey background which goes with the colour scheme of the rest of the magazine and what Dua Lipa is wearing. There is no distinct border so the attention isn't taken away from Dua Lipa.
Representations:
Unlike many other GQ covers, this May 2018 edition of British GQ features a women instead of a man which is what they go for the majority of the time. However, she is shown in a more sexualised way then Men are shown on GQ magazine. This is to appeal to a straight male audience.
Media Language:
Uses alliteration in the subheading of 'Your new manifesto of masculinity' uses alliteration to emphasise the headline and make it stand out more. Also, headlines like 'Could Jacob Rees-Mogg get any worse?' makes the audience ask themselves whether he could in fact get any worse or not and makes the reader curious about what he is done to make him so bad. Furthermore, under the 'Dua Lipa' title, the small bit of text that says 'One billion people can't be wrong' is said as though it is a fact and not an opinion and it is there to big Dua Lipa up and make her seem as popular as possible. This helps the magazine as having her on the front cover makes it seem as though that Dua Lipa herself endorses GQ magazine.
Appeals to the target audience
This magazine appeals to the target audience in a number of ways. The target audience for GQ is a young male audience of 16-35 years of age, though it does in fact have many readers who are female as well. The male audience will be interested in the opposite sex and the front cover of this edition shows it. Also, some of the taglines such as 'Your new manifesto of masculinity will appeal to the audience.
Article
The article featured on Dua Lipa in the May 2018 edition of GQ magazine goes over multiple pages, I have selected the following 2 pages of the article (are right next to each other in the magazine). She discusses her life on tour and the work that is involved with it and also the lead up on how she got to where she is today. The article portrays her as though she is just a normal person to make her seem more relatable and likeable as she says such things about how she wants an extra hour in bed. However, it also discusses all the hard work that goes into her making her music and her tight schedule when on tour to show us how hard she works. The article also quotes certain parts of the article that may be of interest to anyone who is just flicking through the magazine to get them to stop to read the rest of it as well. One of the pages simply uses a full page image of Dua Lipa to catch the audiences attention.
Interview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3Rs-IJOAkA
This interview is with the editor of GQ magazine in the UK, Dylan Jones. Interview starts with an introduction about who they are themselves and who they are interviewing. They discuss the work that goes into the magazine, but also about people doing work experience at the magazine and how people should work hard if they want to get ahead in the UK journalism industry. Even though they only talk about GQ directly for parts of it, it is still promotion for the magazine as Dylan Jones is representative of the GQ brand. The interview is conducted in a back in forth style and the tone isn't too serious.
