Magazine:

VOGUE - JULY 2018 & DECEMBER 2016

Publisher:

Condé Nast Publications

Genre:

Culture/Fashion

Genre Conventions:

This July 2018 edition of British Vogue shows many of the conventions you would expect of a magazine of this genre. Straight away we can see taglines advertising articles and information you'd expect to see in a magazine like Vogue with it containing fashion tips with taglines like 'Summer Style - What to wear at every age' and 'How to detox your wardrobe'. Also, it features a celebrity (Ariana Grande) on the front cover so that people will be drawn to the magazine straight away as they will recognise who is on the front cover. Furthermore, it uses a bright colour scheme so it is eye-catching to the reader. This is also the case with the December 2016 edition. It features a celebrity (Johnny Depp's daughter) and also taglines about fashion and self-improvement.

Settings/Locations:

The July 2018 issue of Vogue doesn't seem to have any distinct setting but may be set outside due to the light background, but the December one seems to be set on a bed and a more homely warm setting which relates to the time of year, as it is winter.

Representations:

The two covers both represent women and the idea that women should take pride in how they look and that how your represent yourself is important. Both women's facial expression doesn't show them smiling like you may expect of a magazine cover but they are shown as casual and as though it's an normal everyday thing what they are doing. This shows the power and status they have and that being part of a photoshoot is just a normal everyday thing for them. Furthermore, the dress that Lily-Rose is wearing is blue which represents confidence and the confidence that she has.

Media Language:

The juxtaposition between the two magazine covers is clear. The July issue uses more warm colours and colours you'd associate with Summer such as yellow and orange so it relates to the time of year. However, the December issue uses more colder colours and ones you would associate with Winter such as blue.

Appeals to the target audience:

The target audience of VOGUE is females of the ages of 16-34. Both covers use women who are also in the same age bracket, so the target audience may be able to identify with them. Furthermore, the taglines on the cover are topics which would stereotypically interest women such as fashion, make-up and celebrity gossip.
