Magazine:
ELLE - February 2018 and June 2017
Publisher:
Hearst
Genre:
Fashion
Genre Conventions:
Both the June 2017 and February 2018 editions of ELLE magazine show many of the conventions you would expect of a Fashion magazine. They both use celebrities or people with a high profile, in this case Lana Del Ray for the June 2017 edition and Neelam Gill who is a model, for the February 2018 edition. Furthermore, the magazines continue with the theme seen in other magazines of this genre to show the person in front of the masthead to make them seen iconic and to show that their magazine is so popular and well known that they are able to partly cover the name of the magazine. The magazines use taglines as well.
Settings/Locations:
The June 2017 edition of ELLE uses an actual real life setting and not in front of a plain background unlike the other magazines that I have studied so far. However, the February 2018 edition still uses the plain background like many of the other magazines I have researched. The white background used in the Feb edition contrasts with the dark gothic clothes worn by the model so it can stand out more and isn't being faded into the background. The June edition sets Lana on top a field of grass.
Representations:
Both of these covers juxtapose each other. They both try to bring out different sides of women, their personalities and how they are represented. The Feb edition goes with the headline of 'BE BOLD, DRESS UP, GO PUNK' which contrasts with the other headline of 'THE LIGHTNESS OF BEING LANA DEL REY'.
Media Language:
Both editions use the mode of address to make it seem as though that the magazine is talking directly for you. It says 'What's your fashion tribe?' and 'Your new skin obsession?' The first one is an enigma code and makes the reader think what they're fashion tribe may actually be and that they may be able to find out if they read the magazine. The second one makes it seem as though that the magazine is dictating how you live your life and that the magazine already knows that you will love whatever 'Your new skin obsession' is.
Appeals to the target audience:
The target audience of ELLE is young women of 16-35 years of age. The magazines use women on the cover who are in this same age bracket and the audience may be able to identify with the women on the front cover.
