vogue was founded in 1892 by American business man Arthur Baldwin turnure and was originally published on a weekly basis focusing on fashion, sports coverage and social affairs. however in 1905-1920 conde Montrose nast purchased vouge after turnures death and changed the focuses to more of a women's based magazine and is said to of made vogue the successful magazine we know and love today. from 1988- present anna wintour is now the main editor of the magazine and helped revitalise by making it more approachable to a younger audience overseeing some of vogues largest editions.
front cover analysis: in this December 2020 edition of vogue we see the first male featuring by themselves on the cover. Harry styles creates arguably one of the most controversial vogue covers to date however sticks to wintours need for revitalising the magazine as before this male celebrities where only ever seen along side a female celebrity. Styles covers the majority of the front page whilst the rest of the cover is somewhat minimalistic with not as much text surrounding as the average vogue cover. this could be intentional of wintour to do as having the first solo male on the front cover is a big deal and doesn't want to take away from that. however the topics covered in the issue still stick to women's life style and fashion including a segment featuring model Emily Ratajkowski and her pregnancy. an inspirational quote from harry styles also features in the top right in a black font tying in with the masthead and standing out from the blue and green whilst speaking on topics such as self belief which a wide target audience can therefore be reached.
in the 4cs model, succeeder would be the main target for a vogue magazine as they pose self confidence linking in with the front covers quote about 'not putting barriers up' and this issue in particular fulfils this desire along with wanting to seek prestige, vogue has made a name for themselves for people desperate to make the cover
Styles is seen in the issue, wearing a dress which had many people struck and caused for backlash, however this move could portray vogue as timeless and breaking male femininity stereotypes, collectively showing that vogue is taking a new approach in finding a different target audience as usually it would be more female based content and show celebrity women the audience could relate too yet having a male like harry styles could bring in more of a teenage audience as it is said that more copy's of this issue had to be released. Styles opened up about embracing his femininity and making a statement that anybody can wear what they want too this still sticks to vogues selling points yet shows us from a different perspective
