Zoella: Judith Butler

Updated: Mar 17, 2023

Apply representation Theory to Zoella:

Throughout Zoella's blogs and vlogs, there are representations of gender that are constructed in different ways. In her vlogs, Zoella only presents stereotypical feminine traits to her audience. In the vlogs and some blogs, she mainly talks about things like baking, shopping and making a effort to look good. She almost polices the idea that women should do these things and have an interest in them to be a woman. Butler says that identity is performatively constructed by the expressions that are said to be its results. These themes of feminine topics are constantly portrayed through her vlogs, reinforcing gender performativity.

This idea of traditional gender stereotypes being reinforced on the website as women needing to care about their appearances. This representation has been a key part of the Zoella brand over the years. This is shown in her style and beauty blogs. For example, the blogs like, "Pastel Season Has Arrived! 50 Spring-Ready Manicures to Inspire Your Next Set" and "Jet, Set, Go: Airport Style Essentials Of The First Class Variety". This representation has become a main part of her brand as she has grown, by getting brand deals and products to sell. Judith Butler says that there is no gender identity behind these expressions. The idea of women being influenced to care about their appearances is only a construction which the media and Zoella adds too. However, these representations are constantly portrayed at many points on the website. For example, the style section is filled with blogs on the best clothes to buy or how to style for a certain season. Judith Butler would say that this is not becoming repetition but a ritual. Women are becoming used to getting told to buy new outfits or makeup products and how they should use them that it creates that feminine representation.
