In 2020 Rihanna was on the cover of the may addition of the British Vogue Magazine
The target audience is mainly women as the magazine is beauty and fashion focused and that a leading female celebrity/CEO is on the cover. With Rihanna's status it may be targeted at late 20s to teenagers (29-17) who know her from music or her make-up brand. They are targeting the black community by using Rihanna so women in this community can see themselves being targeted. They are also just targeting women from across the world.
The Young and Rubicam 4cs model would say the target audience is the succeeder this means someone with lots of self confidence and wanting to be known for their success. It would also say it is aimed at the aspirer which is someone who focus on personality and appearance.
People who are targeted may buy this because they are into fashion or may be wanting to learn how to be a bit more stylish or trendy as vogue is partially fashion based so they would have good tricks to stay stylish. People who are targeted may look at it for entertainment as some people find entertainment by looking at fashion/beauty magazines and even celebrity's. The target audience would feel they are connected to this as it may fit their ideologies.
The ideology for the magazine is the luxury lifestyle which is shown with the text saying goddess gowns the lux white tux which we can assume reflects this message of being rich and having this luxury lifestyle. Another view of the magazine is female empowerment as she is not sexualised and she is looking confident as she is a CEO which the magazine is aimed at women so this makes sense.
There is a contrast between the use of white (a colour signifying innocence and purity) throughout cover, and the use of Rhianna as the front cover model that provides an oppositional reading. This would be due to the artists controversial music and history with self sexualisation- especially with her hit song 's&m' released in 2010. This contrasts a point made earlier about the themes of this magazine cover being about 'female empowerment' given that it seems to be aimed towards aspirer's, maybe between the age of 15-29. This younger audience means that the use of Rhianna is almost condoning her actions, and encouraging their audience to sexualise themselves in the name of profit.
I understand that this text is trying to promote ideologies centralised around beauty and fashion by using a popular and well-known celebrity like Rihanna, however, I think it actually promotes diversity by using a figure such as Rihanna. Not only can she be used as an face used to attract black audiences into buying the magazine, but she is also an identifier for black woman. They are able to envision themselves in Rihanna's place as a successful business woman.
