Audience Responses: Teen Vogue

This cover for Teen Vogue is clearly targeted at teen girls as there is the use of the stereotypical pink and of course, the "attractive" Justin Bieber also a stereotypical teen girl crush. Furthermore, the target audience is obvious as it has all the topics relating to girly things such as "Glam Nails" and "HOT Fashion". The audience may use this text to get an inside look on Justin Biebers life as it has in big magenta text "Justin's Crazy Year" so this must be an incentive for some.

The cover is appealing as it has pink writing looking both pleasing and also girly which appeals to the target audience. Furthermore it has pink stars which can remind some people of the Hollywood stars and is both cute and girly. Continuing, there is lots about looks which is a thing girls of that age are always concerned with. Also, the use of Justin himself is an appeal as it both leads to the target audience being intrigued but also just fans of him in itself which leads to many people buying this despite it being title Teen Vogue.

This product reinforces the stereotypes of young girls. I believe the preferred reading is that teenage girls like pink glam and Justin Bieber so they will want to buy the magazine. The audience will align to gender stereotypes due to the ideologies seen in this magazine.

I understand that this text is trying to reinforce certain ideologies surrounding teenage girls, however I think that the magazine cover presents a sexist and close minded view about young girls. The use of a colour typically associated with girls creates a stereotype, most likely used as a shortcut to meaning to seem appealing to girls. Additionally, the use of Justin Bieber further enforces this sexist ideology. The text preys on insecurities as a way of enticing people to read this product.
