Back to Black

"Back to Black" is a documentary style film directed by Sam Taylor Johnson which follows the story of Amy Winehouse's rise to fame and the making of her groundbreaking album "Back to Black". It also shows her on-and-of-again relationship with Black Fielder-Civil who is played by Jack O'Connell and her complicated relationship with substance abuse.

The movie shows the life and music of Amy Winehouse, through the journey of adolescence to adulthood and the creation of one of her best-selling albums of all time .Throughout the film, we see Amy's relationship with alcohol and other substances progresses, as a reflection of her own personal struggles. The use of archival footage, concert performances and intimate moments provides a deeper understanding of Amy's artistry and her struggles. The soundtrack, which features songs from her infamous album "Back to Black", serves as both a tribute to her songwriting but also a somber reminder of the pain behind her lyrics.

"Back to Black" is more than just a biopic, its the distressing reminder of the balance between fame, creativity and self-destruction. Although the film doesn't shy away from the heartbreaking darkness in Amy's life, it also celebrates her incredible talent and the continuing legacy of her music. However, the release of Back to Black has not been without controversy, particularly surrounding its portrayal of Amy Winehouse's life and the choices made by the filmmakers and producers. Some critics argue that the film might exaggerate Amy's darkest moments, focusing too much on her personal downfall and self-destruction, rather than celebrating her musical achievements. Amy Winehouse's father, Mitch Winehouse has even been critical of the script and the casting of Marisa Abela to play the lead role, he says that the film misrepresents Amy's personality and her relationships especially their father-daughter dynamic. Mitch has also raised concerns that the film could further exploit Amy's legacy rather than profiting from her own personal pain and struggles.

Overall, even through the criticisms of others, i believe that "Back to Black" is an essential watch for anyone who admires Amy's music or wants to understand her more. The movie is moving, through the storytelling of Amy's life but also the reflection of her struggles and the achievements in her life.
