performance video conventions - Hey Jude

In the music video for Hey Jude by the Beatles, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who had also worked with them when directing clips for paperback writer and rain, the Beatles put on a live performance for a controlled audience.

To circumvent the ban on miming music on television made by the musicians union, the decision was made to use a live orchestra and the vocals to be live, however the Beatles played to a backing track.

The video symbolises a sort of unity, not only between the band, who had problems brewing between the members, but between the public and the members. it shows this when the song explodes into a chant, with the audience getting on stage and performing the chant along with them. It showcases normal every day people from a variety of backgrounds performing with massive icons on the same stage.
