The Big Issue with LGBTQIA+ representation in media: Stuart Hall.

Updated: Nov 5, 2021

Grayson Perry is a transvestite featured within the pages of The Big Issues 25th anniversary edition, he talks about how the Daily Mail facilitated his sexual fetish, the Daily mail is known for upsetting the LGBTQ community, this shows in many types of media, LGBTQ representation is limited or controlled. the Big Issue addressing this issue and letting someone within this community have their voice heard heavily links to their ideology of helping the community. Stuart Hall would state that The Big Issue produces meaning through their representation of Perry, in the picture Perry is donned in rainbow covered clad, showing his status within the LGBTQ community clearly, as the rainbow is the sign of the community, this shows his pride to be a transvestite. this is supported by his platform boots and stance, the boots make Perry taller, he can stand above the hate, and once again show off his pride as he is standing tall for everyone to see, the stance does the exact same thing as he has his hands close to his chest, very similar to the iconography of putting your hand on your heart for something like the national anthem.
