Who Killed Daphne? is a podcast that explores one of the most startling true crime cases in recent memory. Daphne Galizia was a Maltese journalist and anti-corruption activist. Her last series of reports focused on the release of The Panama Papers. a series of politically sensitive documents. On October 16, 2017, Daphne was killed by a devastating car bomb that sent her son Matthew into a race to discover who killed her but also everything Daphne knew about the elite. The podcast has 6 parts that each run for around 30-40 minutes. Stephen Grey is the narrator and writer of the show. I listened to the podcast on youtube but it runs on spotify, Amazon music etc.
The podcast features interviews from the main people that were involved in the crime such as Daphne's family, and adds an element of raw emotion as we hear her son beginning to cry over the ordeal. The use of keeping this in allows for the audience to connect with the case reminds us that this really happened, it isn't a made up story from a TV show or film.
The podcast utilizes a wide range of sound effects to create more vivid imagery fir the audience, such as message notifications or sirens.
The podcast is certainly gritty and a tough listen, the first-hand testimony of her son, Matthew, who was in an upstairs room looking down on the street is horrifying. Following this, the podcast isn't afraid to get technical and requires the audience to either have preexisting knowledge or gain knowledge of Maltese politics. The podcast suffers from the sheer amount of clues, suspects and other machinations. It's dense and can be hard to follow. If you can maintain your concentration through the series, it's worth your while. However, the show’s jangly theme music and aggressive use of cliffhanger endings arguably interfere with its narrative arc. This appears to be becoming more common in true crime podcasts, as they arguably are seemingly becoming more like serial television.
