Week in Pictures

The shot used to take the picture is a medium long shot, making sure that the viewer can see a large amount of the location and background that the picture is set. It also uses a low angle, which helps to emphasize the iron man, as it looks more strong and powerful standing alone, looking at the lights. This could be to give a good representation of Liverpool, as it is known for the iron men and gives a more abstract view culturally.

The photographer has edited the picture to enhance the green and brighten the pink lighting in the picture, presenting a more aesthetic, dramatic image of the Northern lights and making them even more appealing to viewers. The contrast in the lighting of the iron man, dark, almost like a silhouette, compared to the bright luminant lights is very stark, almost making the iron man more of a focus than the lights.

The mise-en-scene of the image creates meaning, as the iron man appears to be looking at the lights, showing that they are so beautiful even statues admire them. The lights even seem to be framing the statues shape, creating an illusion that they are in sync and appreciate each others artistry.

You can also see the cranes from the docks in Liverpool in the bottom right of the image, enhancing the context of the picture, as not only does it show the strength in Liverpool through the straight, powerful posture of the iron man, but it also shows people around the world that Liverpool are still workers and that they hold a lot of power in the labour economy.
